A Studio Tour with Jono Smart — a Glasgow-based Potter
As we travelled around Scotland adding greenhouses to the Haarkon Greenhouse Tour we couldn't resist dropping in on our friend Jono and having a nosey around his Glasgow studio. We met Jono Smart IRL a few years ago (just before we started documenting our travels on here) after becoming Instagram acquaintances and we've talked almost daily online ever since. Jono is a gardener-turned-ceramicist and shares his processes, trials, tribulations and of many successes on Instagram, which for us, makes fascinating viewing. It's clear to see how his work has developed over a period of time; how it's become much more delicate and refined whilst still retaining it's character and distinction.
Working with raw textures and a neutral colour palette, Jono's finished work feels rugged and substantial and so incredibly connected to the earth that it's thrown from but with a little design element added such as his signature finger rest and a slight taper in form.
In an effort (an ingenious one at that) to control his workload and finances, Jono opens his online shop every now and again in order to sell his work and in the past has always sold out within a matter of hours. During our visit he was working towards his biggest shop update yet and was slowly but surely filling the shelves along the wall with what we would describe as a love letter to the colour grey.
Jono's next shop updates will be in September and December and you can make sure you're notified by subscribing to his newsletter here or by following him on Instagram. We recommend both as we own a few of his pieces that bring a lot of joy to our lives - and he's the king of witty captions on Instagram too.
