Brush Calligraphy with Alice Gabb — Airbnb Experience
Just before Christmas we hopped on the train and took a short but fruitful trip to London to increase our creative repertoire. A while back we were invited by Airbnb to have a go at some of their experiences (if you don't know about the 'experience' arm of Airbnb you can find out here) and we accepted.
We did a couple of very different experiences, one of which was our initiation into Tokyo and will be blogged very soon - we still haven't worked through the Japan images yet! For something a little closer to home we decided on a session learning Brush Calligraphy with illustrator and modern calligrapher Alice Gabb. It all took place in the en pointe setting of Sans Pere; a recent addition to the Shoreditch area and a really beautiful space in which to spend some time. The interior blew us away with interesting surfaces, great use of matte green paint and simplicity in every direction. We shall certainly be back to visit later in the year when the sun comes out to play because we reckon that the natural light will really make that place sing.
Anyway, to the experience itself...
Alice is a calligrapher and stationery designer with a small studio in Dalston, working on commissions for wedding invites, bespoke illustrations and pretty much anything that requires contemporary hand lettering.
The session started with a brief introduction from Alice and then a few hours of working our way through the guide sheets she had prepared for us; beginning with a variety of lines and moving from capital letters to lower case and then joining them all up, finally ending in us attempting to write our names. We didn't expect the act of writing to be so therapeutic and got thoroughly engrossed in our brush-to-ink-to-paper cycle - although we did manage to stop occasionally for cake.
This year our Christmas gifts came labelled with brush calligraphy tags!
