CHA-OLOGY — a Japanese Tea House Experience in Manchester
On a busy main road in central Manchester sits a bubble of peace and quiet in the form of contemporary teahouse, CHA-OLOGY. Although the owners Mei and Jamie recently celebrated the shops 2nd birthday we only learned of its existence quite recently.
Far from your usual hot-beverage-shop encounter (they don’t serve coffee at all), CHA-OLOGY is more of an experience than anything else and one to be seriously savoured.
Mei and Jamie’s concept is simple:
With a little care, you can enjoy delicious tea.
The tea house aims to provide a special, non-daily-life -experience.
Soft and beautiful sounds,
Aroma of Japanese tea,
Sweetness of homemade sweets.
Simplify your thoughts,
Allow your senses to be uplifted,
Relax your heart and body,
Enjoy time passing slowly by.
The teahouse is a reservation-only establishment and as a result of that you really feel like you’re getting a truly dedicated service that is not only personal but a very rare occurrence in the western world.
When we visited we enjoyed matcha, genmaicha (tea with puffed rice - so comforting!) and a selection of incredible sweets that Mei creates herself. The sweet menu changes regularly and quite often reflects the season which gives the customer a deeper connection to the natural world.
Although simple, the interior is very cleverly designed and incorporates a raised platform (shoes must be removed when on the deck) which invites customers to sit on the floor. With a soothing soundtrack of calming music and the distant sound of the traffic outside you feel positively swaddled.
You can can make a reservation and book workshops through their website here.
Please be sure to read the house rules first so that everyone can enjoy the experience.
We very much enjoyed our visit and we’ll definitely be back again soon.
