Chatsworth House Greenhouse - Derbyshire
The gardens at Chatsworth House (near Bakewell, Derbyshire) are extensive and full of surprises. Naturally we gravitate towards the glasshouses and there are plenty to choose from; a Peach house, Camellia house, vinery and hothouse - amongst cold frames and other working greenhouses.
Chatsworth is particularly special in the grand scheme of things because in 1826, Joseph Paxton was appointed the Head Gardener. As part of his work here he designed and oversaw the construction of one of the largest glasshouses ever built, to provide a home the 6th Duke of Devonshire's exotic plant collection (including the famous Cavendish Banana.) That glasshouse is no longer here (it became too expensive to heat during WWI and fell into disrepair) but there is a brilliant maze set in it's place.
