Kerstin & Malte's Swedish Garden — Småland, Sweden
*We were kindly hosted by Visit Sweden during our entire stay in the country but all words, pictures and opinions are our own.*
As part of our guided tour around Småland we were invited to the home of Kerstin and Malte where they gave us a warm welcome of glögg (kind of like mulled wine) and ginger biscuits. I guess the idea here was to give us a taste of Christmas and we were treated to a performance of song and dance to get us in the spirit.
Kerstin runs a small garden centre nearby and we were told that her shop is a much grander affair than even her garden - we really have to go back so we can visit for ourselves.
Now we know that this was more to give us a taste of Christmas and a hint at the celebrations that take place throughout the year but we felt a little like what we’d really seen was the closeness of the smaller communities and the individuals that live in Småland. We learnt that Maltes small grocery store was a major resource for the villages around and that gave us an insight into what life is like outside of the major cities like Malmo or Stockholm. Interestingly we spotted small lamps/lights in all the house windows and they told us that it’s a sign of openness - if the lights are on then you’ll be welcome to knock on the door of your neighbour.
